Call for PhD Scholarship Applications for Africans 2026 at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa


Summary

The In-Region Scholarship Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and administered by DAAD, supports PhD candidates in Development Studies at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). It aims to strengthen research and academic capacities in Sub-Saharan Africa.


Benefits

The scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • Full tuition fees (paid directly to the university).

  • Study and research allowance (€920 per year).

  • Thesis publishing costs (€800 one-time grant).

  • Monthly living allowance (€700).

  • Travel allowance (for In-Region candidates, covered twice – at the start and end of the scholarship).

  • Health insurance coverage (for In-Region candidates only).

  • Opportunity for a short-term research stay in Germany (3 to 6 months, subject to funding availability).

  • Access to summer schools and training in Germany.


Eligibilities.

  • Hold a two-year Master’s degree with above-average academic results (at least Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent).

  • Demonstrate strong motivation and commitment to their studies.

  • Have proficiency in English (language of instruction).

  • Completed their last university degree within the past six years.

  • Are nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country (excluding South African nationals).
